Can ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 identify the same book?

Yes. Many books published during the ISBN transition have both an ISBN-10 and a 978-prefixed ISBN-13 that identify the same title, edition, and format. The ISBN-13 is the modern format and is usually the best number to use for textbook searches.

Why does an ISBN-10 sometimes end in X?

The final character in an ISBN-10 is a check digit. When the check digit value is 10, it is written as X so the ISBN can stay exactly 10 characters long.

Can different textbook formats have different ISBNs?

Yes. Hardcover, paperback, loose-leaf, ebook, rental, international, and access-code bundle versions can each have different ISBNs. Match the ISBN from your syllabus or bookstore listing before comparing prices.
