Why ISBN matters more than the title
Textbook titles can repeat across editions, formats, bundles, and custom course versions. ISBNs give you a much cleaner way to match the exact item your instructor or bookstore listed.
Start with the ISBN on your syllabus, course portal, or campus bookstore page. Then compare that number against any listing before you worry about price.
Where to find ISBN-10 and ISBN-13
Most textbooks show ISBN-13 as a 13-digit number starting with 978 or 979. ISBN-10 is the older 10-character version and may include an X at the end.
Check the syllabus first, then the bookstore page, publisher page, back cover, or copyright page. If two sources disagree, ask your instructor which version is required.
ISBN checks students should make
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| ISBN-13 | Best match for modern textbook listings. |
| Edition number | Older editions can have different chapters or problem sets. |
| Format | Hardcover, paperback, loose-leaf, and digital versions can differ. |
| Access code bundle | Used copies may not include unused codes. |
Compare prices after you confirm the match
Once the required ISBN is confirmed, use Textbook Price Check to search by ISBN. That helps you avoid comparing a cheaper but incorrect edition against the book your class actually needs.
