It depends on what your course actually requires
Online homework platforms often include an ebook, but that does not automatically mean the physical textbook is optional. Some instructors assign online work only, while others expect students to read from print or use book-specific problem numbers.
The key question is not whether a platform exists. It is whether your section requires print, digital access, both, or either one.
Questions to answer before buying print
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does online access include the full ebook? | If yes, print may be optional for some students. |
| Are readings assigned by page number? | Print and ebook pagination may differ. |
| Are homework problems assigned from the physical book? | You may need the exact edition or problem set. |
| Is the ebook access temporary? | Access may expire before a later course or final review. |
| Do you study better from print? | Format preference can affect whether the cheaper option is practical. |
Compare your format options
If online access includes the full ebook, digital-only may be the lowest-friction option. If you prefer print, a used textbook plus standalone access may work, but only if the total cost beats a bundle.
Renting print can make sense when you need a physical copy for one term and access is bought separately. Buying used can make sense if you want to keep the book or use it in a later course.
Compare total cost, not just format
The cheapest visible textbook may not be cheapest after access is added. Compare new bundle, digital access, used print plus standalone access, rental plus access, and print-only options.
If the course uses online homework from week one, delivery timing also matters. A physical book that arrives late may not help with the first assignments.
